Keyes, Sidney: Európa foglyai (Europe’s Prisoners in Hungarian)

Portre of Keyes, Sidney

Europe’s Prisoners (English)

Never a day, never a day passes

But I remember them, their stoneblind faces

Beaten by arclights, their eyes turned inward

Seeking an answer and their passage homeward.

For being citizens of time, they never

Would learn the body’s nationality.

Tortured for years now, they refuse to sever

Spirit from flesh or accept our callow century.

Not without hope, but lacking present solace,

The preacher knows the feel of nails and grace;

The singer snores; the orator’s facile hands

Are fixed in a gesture no one understands.

Others escaped, yet paid for their betrayal:

Even the politicians with their stale

Visions and cheap flirtations with the past

Will not die any easier at the last.

The ones who took to garrets and consumption

In foreign cities, found a deeper dungeon

Than any Dachau. Free but still confined

The human lack of pity split their mind.

Whatever days, whatever seasons pass,

The prisoners must stare in pain’s white face:

Until at last the courage they have learned

Shall burst the walls and overturn the world.

Európa foglyai (Hungarian)

Sohase múlik, sohase múlik se éj, se nap,

hogy én ne látnám őket, kő-vak arcukat,

amit ívlámpa-fény ver s a befordult szemet,

választ kutatva s ösvényt, amely haza vezet:

ők az idő polgárai, a testnek

honosságáról már egyik se tud,

kínzatva rég, nem metszik el a lelket

a hústól s messzedobják éretlen századuk.

Nem reménytelenül, de gyors vígaszt mégse

ráismer már a pap körömre s kegyelemre;

hortyog az énekes; a szónok fürge keze

oly mozdulatba dermedt, mit nem ért senkise.

Mások megszöktek és szökésükért fizettek:

a politikusok, hiába volt a keshedt

látomás és a múlttal játékuk, kelletésük,

könnyebb halált nem halnak ők se végül.

Aki padlásra s tüdővészbe tévedt

idegen városban, börtöne mélyebb

Dachaunál. Esze kötve, bár szabad,

a szánalom szomjában meghasad.

Sohase múlik, sohase múlik se év, se nap,

a fájdalom fehér arcába mered a rab,

míg végül megtanult bátorsága kicsap,

forgatja a világot, fordítja a falat.
