Sandburg, Carl: Parasztasszony, reggel (She opens the barn door every morning in Hungarian)

Portre of Sandburg, Carl

She opens the barn door every morning (English)

Open the barn door, farm woman.
It is time for the cows to be milked.
Their udders are full from the sleep night.
Open the door with your right hand shuttling a cleat,
Your left hand pulling a handle.
The smell of the barn is let out to the pastures.
Dawn lets itself in at the open door.
A cow left out in the barnyard all the night
Looks on as though you do this every morning.
Open the barn door, farm woman, you do it
As you have done it five hundred times.
As a sleep woman heavy with the earth,
Clean as a milk pail washed in the sun,
Your open the barn door a half mile away
And a cow almost turns its head and looks on.

Parasztasszony, reggel (Hungarian)

Nyisd ki a jószágudvar kapuját, asszonyka,
Ideje már megfejni a tehenet,
A jóízű alvástól tőgye feszül.
Jobboddal félrelököd a reteszt,
S a kilincset lenyomod bal kezeddel.
Kiszökken a tehénszag a legelőre,
S a nyitott ajtón beillan a hajnal.
Jámboran bámul az éjszaka künnhagyott tehén,
Mint reggel te, úgy merengő az udvaron.
Nyisd ki az istálló ajtaját, asszonyka,
Ahogy eddig is kinyitottad ötszázszor.
Még érzed az álom terhét, nehéz, mint a föld,
S oly tiszta, mint a napmosdatta fejőlábas,
Nyitott istállód ajtaja majd’ fél mérföldre
És egy tehén, feléd fordított fejjel kibámul.
