Moore, Marianne: A csend (Silence in Hungarian)

Portre of Moore, Marianne

Silence (English)

 My father used to say,
“Superior people never make long visits,
have to be shown Longfellow’s grave
or the glass flowers at Harvard.
Self-reliant like the cat -
that takes its prey to privacy,
the mouse’s limp tail hanging like a shoelace from its mouth -
they sometimes enjoy solitude,
and can be robbed of speech
by speech which has delighted them.
The deepest feeling always shows itself in silence;
not in silence, but restraint.”
Nor was he insincere in saying, “Make my house your inn.”
Inns are not residences.

A csend (Hungarian)

Apám azt mondogatta:
„Felsőbbrendű ember seholsem időz hosszasan,
legföljebb megtekinti Longfellow sírját
vagy a Harvard melegházi virágait.
Magabízón, ahogy a macska
- amely zsákmányával elvonul,
a petyhüdt egérfarok, mint cipőfűző, csüng a száján -,
magányát is élvezi olykor,
s meglehet, szavát szegi
a szó, amellyel múlatja magát.
A legmélyebb érzés mindig a csendben mutatkozik.
Nem a csendben: az önmegfékezésben."
Akkor sem volt őszintétlen, mikor így szólt: „Tedd
kocsmáddá a házam."
A kocsma nem lakóhely.
