Jeffers, Robinson: A kegyetlen sólyom (The Cruel Falcon in Hungarian)

Portre of Jeffers, Robinson

The Cruel Falcon (English)

Contemplation would make a good life, keep it strict, only

The eyes of a desert skull drinking the sun,

Too intense for flesh, lonely

Exultations of white bone;

Pure action would make a good life, let it be sharp-

Set between the throat and the knife.

A man who knows death by heart

Is the man for that life.

In pleasant peace and security

How suddenly the soul in a man begins to die.

He shall look up above the stalled oxen

Envying the cruel falcon,

And dig under the straw for a stone

To bruise himself on.

A kegyetlen sólyom (Hungarian)

A szemlélődés volna a jó élet, de úgy ám,

Hogy csak egy sivatagi koponya szemei

Isszák a húsnak túl erős napot, a fehér csont

Ujjong magányosan;

A tiszta cselekvés volna a jó élet, de odáig

Élezve, hogy nincs más, csak a torok meg a kés.

Aki betéve tudja a halált,

Annak való az ilyen élet.

A mostani békében-biztonságban

Hamar halódni kezd az emberben a lélek.

Fölnéz majd az istállóban hizlalt ökrök fölé,

És megirigyli a kegyetlen sólymot,

És leás a szalma alá egy kőért,

Hogy magát rajta összezúzza.
