Davie, Donald: William Cowper emlékére (Homage to William Cowper in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

Homage to William Cowper (English)

Mrs Throckmorton's bull-finch sang a song.
(Domesticate that comfortable  bird!)
But still the deer has wandered from the herd,
The bard was not articulate for long.

A pasticheur of late-Augustan styles,
I too have sung the sofa and the hare
Made nightmare ride upon a private air
And hearths, extinguished, send a chill for miles.

This costive plan, this dense upholstery,
These mice and kittens, this constructive rhyme,
These small Infernos of another time -
What's all this modish Hecuba to me?

Most poets let the morbid fancy roam.
The squalid rat broke through the finch's fence,
Which was a cage, and still was no defence:
For Horror starts, like Charity, at home.

William Cowper emlékére (Hungarian)

Throckmortonné pirókja énekelt.
(Szelidítsd meg e kezes madarat!)
Az őz a nyájtól mégis elszakadt,
Világos szót a bárd későre lelt.

Utánzom én a késő-Augustus kort,
Nálam is kapott dalt nyuszi s divány,
Lidérc ült titkos dallam-paripán,
S hunyt tűzhely fagyot mérföldekre szórt.

Rossz lóca, majd diványon dús selyem,
Egerek, cicák, sok cserízü rím,
Múlt poklocskák és hekubai kin,
E divatos zűr - mindez mit nekem?

Költők, bolyong kór képzeletetek.
Vesszőkalitka nem véd, dalosok,
Áttört a patkány, s pusztult a pirók:
Hisz bennünk indul iszony s szeretet.
