Davie, Donald: Téli tehetség (A Winter Talent in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

A Winter Talent (English)

Lighting a spill late in the afternoon,
I arn that coal whose heat it should unfix;
Winter is come again, and none too soon
For meditation on its raft of sticks.

Some quick bright talents can dispense with coals
And burn their boats continually, command
An unreflecting brightness that unrolls
Out of whatever firings come to hand.

What though less sunny spirits never turn
The dry detritus of an August hill
To dangerous glory? Better still to burn
Upon that gloom where all have felt a chill.

Téli tehetség (Hungarian)

Forgácsot gyújtva késő délután,
Magam vagyok a szén, hővel teli;
Tél van megint, s csöppet sem túl korán,
Rőzsetutaján elmerengeni.

Van sziporkázó tehetség, aki
Szén nélkül égeti hajóit el,
Visszfénytelen fényt bont és gombolyít
Akármi tűzből, mely kézhez közel.

És ha egy augusztusi domb alélt
Halmából vészes dicsfényt nem mimel
Kevésbé napos lelkű? Jobb azért,
Hol fáztunk mind, homályban égni el.
