Davie, Donald: Karácsonyi sorok egy feleségnek (Christmas Syllabics for a Wife in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

Christmas Syllabics for a Wife (English)

When I think of you
dying before or
after me, I am
ashamed how little
there is for either
one of us to look
back upon as done
wholly in concert.

We have spent our lives
arming for them. Now
we see they begin
to be over, and
now is it too late
to profit by what
seems to have been a
long preparation?

The certainty that
many have scaped scot-
free or even praised
sets the adrenalin
anger flushing up
through me as often
before, but can we
wait now for justice?

Horace says. Be wise
broach the ripe wine and
carefully decant
it. Now is the time
to measure wishes
by what life has to
give. Not much. So be
from now on greedy.

Karácsonyi sorok egy feleségnek (Hungarian)

Ha elgondolom, hogy
meghalsz előttem
vagy utánam, szégyellem,
milyen kevés időre
nézhetünk vissza
mi ketten most, mely
valóban teljes
összhangban telt.

Életünk azzal telt,
hogy felfegyverkeztünk
rá. Most azt látjuk,
múlik végképp; hát
késő lenne, hogy -
hasznát lássuk
mind e sok, nagy
készülődésnek?

A bizonyosság, hogy
sokan ép bőrrel, sőt,
dicsőn megúszták,
még ma is lángvörös
dühhel tölt el, úgy,
mint régen, de hát
igazságtevésre
várhatunk-e mi most már?

Horatius szól, Légy bölcs,
fejtsd le az érett
bort, gonddal töltsd
szét. Most itt az idő,
hogy vágyainkat ahhoz
mérjük, amit az élet
kínál. Nem sok. Ezért
legyünk mától mohóbbak.
