Riddles, Anglo-Saxon: A hattyú (Swan 21 (k-d 7) in Hungarian)

Portre of Riddles, Anglo-Saxon

Swan 21 (k-d 7) (English)

Silent is my garment   when I tread the earth

or dwell in the towns   or stir the waters.

Sometimes my trappings   lift me up over

the habitations of heroes   and this high air,

and the might of the welkin   bears me afar

above mankind.   Then my adornments

resound in song   and sing aloud

with clear melody   —when I do not rest

on land or water,   a moving spirit.*

A hattyú (Hungarian)

Tollruhám nesztelen,   ha földön lépdelek,

fészkeiben nyugszom,   habjait megnyergelem.

Olykor a szárnyam   és a lengő levegő

magasba röppent   ember-hajlékok fölé,

s a felhők ereje   messzire hordoz

magasan a nép fölött.   Tollaim vígan

zengnek, zenélnek,   énekelnek élesen,

ha tovább nem időzöm   pástokon és partokon,

de az égbe nyilalok,   vándor szellem.
