Graves, Robert: Szerelmi történet (A love story in Hungarian)

Portre of Graves, Robert

A love story (English)

The full moon easterly rising, furious,
Against a winter sky ragged with red;
The hedges high in snow, and owls raving
Solemnities not easy to withstand:
A shiver wakes the spine.

In boyhood, having encountered the scene,
I suffered horror: I fetched the moon home,
With owls and snow, to nurse in my head
Throughout the trials of a new spring,
Famine unassuaged.

But fell in love, and made a lodgement
Of love on those frozen ramparts.
Her image was my ensign: snows melted,
Hedges sprouted, the moon tenderly shone,
The owls trilled with tongues of nightingale.

These were all lies, though they matched the time,
And brought me less than luck: her image
Warped in the weather, turned beldamish.
Then back came winter on me at a bound,
The pallid sky heaved with a moon-quake.

Dangerous it had been with love-notes
To serenade Queen Famine.
In tears I recomposed the former scene,
Let the snow lie, watched the moon rise, suffered die owls,
Paid homage to them of unevent.

Szerelmi történet (Hungarian)

A telihold dühödten ébredt,
a téli ég tépett volt és piros.
Sövények hó alatt s a baglyok őrjöngő
ünnepének nem könnyű ellenállni:
gerincem borzadt.

Mint kisfiút ez a titokzatos táj
riasztott és gyötört: hazavittem a holdat,
baglyokat és havat, fejemben dédelgettem őket
az új tavasz s csillapítatlan éhség
kemény próbái közt.

De szerelmes lettem s ott a fagyos töltésen
rendeztem be szállást a szerelemnek.
Képe lett jelképem: a hó elolvadt,
kihajtott a sövény, lágyan sütött a hold,
fülemülék nyelvén trilláztak a baglyok.

Ez mind hazugság volt, bár illett az időhöz.
De sok szerencsét nem hozott: a képe
az esőben megvetemedett, vénasszonyos lett.
aztán egy ugrással megint elért a tél,
a sápadt ég hold-láztól lihegett.

Nem volt veszélytelen, szerelmes dalokkal
ostromolni Éhség Királynőt.
Könnyek közt raktam össze a régi tájat,
hagytam: heverjen a hó, láttam kelni a holdat, tűrtem a baglyokat
öledben, áldott eseménytelenség!
