Williams, Hugo: Új kabát, utolsó esély (New Coat, Last Chance in Hungarian)

Portre of Williams, Hugo

New Coat, Last Chance (English)

I wore a coat like this
when they rescued me from the plot
of my first adventure.

I was climbing the weir with my dog.
"Don’t move! " shouted my governess
from the prow of motorboat.

I washed my hands in the vestry,
but the smell of oilskin
stayed on my fingers in church.

My disgrace comes back to me
as I turn up the collar
in the long mirror of this shop.

"Don’t move! " whispers my governess.
Her goggles freeze me in my tracks.
My feet slither.

Smells remember us as we were then –
half fact, half fiction –
trying on different lives.

They race ahead of us like spaniels,
turning and waiting by a river
for their masters to come true.

Új kabát, utolsó esély (Hungarian)

Ilyen kabátot viseltem,
amikor első kalandom
bonyodalmából kimentettek.

Másztam föl a bukógátra kutyámmal.
"Ne mozdulj!"- üvöltött a nevelőnőm
egy motorcsónak orrából.

Kezet mostam a sekrestyében,
de az olajos szövet szaga
a templomban is érződött ujjaimon.

Gyalázatom most visszatér hozzám,
ahogy felhajtom a gallért
e bolt hosszú tükrében.

"Ne mozdulj!" - suttogja a nevelőnőm.
védőszemüvegétől a velőm megdermed.
Szétcsúsznak lábaim.

Szagok emlékeznek rá, milyenek voltunk akkor -
félig tény, félig képzelgés -
különféle ruhákat próbálva.

Mint spánielek, versenyt futnak előttünk,
megfordulva és várva egy folyónál
a gazdáikra, hogy létrejöjjenek.
