Burns, Robert: Egy öreg angol dalból alkotva (Altered from an old English song in Hungarian)

Portre of Burns, Robert

Altered from an old English song (English)

How cruel are the Parents
Who riches only prize,
And to the wealthy booby
Poor Woman sacrifice:
Meanwhile the hapless Daughter
Has but a choice of strife;
To shun a tyrant Father's hate,
Become a wretched Wife.

The ravening hawk pursuing,
The trembling dove thus flies,
To shun impelling ruin
Awhile her pinions tries;
Till of escape despairing,
No shelter or retreat,
She trusts the ruthless Falconer
And drops beneath his feet.

Egy öreg angol dalból alkotva (Hungarian)

Szülők mily borzalmasak,
kik csak a jólétet díjazzák
és jómódú fajankóknak
szegény lányukat áldozzák:
Időközben a boldogtalan lánynak
viszályból van-e menedéke?
Hogy kerüljék kényúr apa árnyak,
nyomorult hitves lesz belőle.

A ragadozó sólyom követi
a borzongó galamb repkedését;
ki hatásos végzetét kerüli,
szárnycsapással menti létezését.
Míg szökése nem reménytelen,
nem hátrál vagy bújik,
solymárban hisz, ki oly lelketlen
s annak lába alá hullik.
