Laughlin, James: Amit a ceruza ír (What the Pencil Writes in Hungarian)

Portre of Laughlin, James

What the Pencil Writes (English)

Often when I go out I
put in my coat pocket

some paper and a pen-
cil in case I want to

write something down
well there they are

wherever I go and as
my coat moves the pen-

cil writes by itself
a kind of gibberish

hieroglyphic which I
often think as I un-

dress at night & take
out those papers with

nothing written on
them but strange and

meaningless marks is
the story of my life

Amit a ceruza ír (Hungarian)

Hazulról elmenet
gyakorta a kabát

zsebbe papírt s ceru-
zát teszek legyen

ha tán írni fogok
ott kuksolnak akár-

hol vagyok a kabát
mozgására a ce-

ruza magától is
lefirkál valami

halandzsa ékírást
éjszaka vetkezés

közben kivéve és
elnézve a papírt

melyen nincs róva más
csak vad-kusza jelek

azt gondolom, ezek
mondják el életem
