Eörsi István: At this stage of ageing (Öregedésem jelenlegi stádiumában in English)

még megperzsel a rejtődző parázs,
de inkább szokás vonz, mint akarás.

Amit felveszek, szívesen elejtem.
Csak aki meghal, azt nem felejtem.

Ha meglop, akit szerettem, a nő,
már nem hiszem, hogy ez elbűvölő,

sem hogy rosszabb lett, amióta lop -
olyan amilyen, csak szeretve jobb.

Újabban a fát nézem, nem az erdőt,
és a szeretet árfolyama megnőtt.

Öregségem jelenlegi fokán
kívánom, hogy az ajtót törje rám,

itasson át azzal, mit nem tudok,
mielőtt rámkeményül a burok.

Félelmeim nyugtalan alszanak
szökevény szavak halmai alatt,

A dolgok – protestál bár az öt érzék -
kimutatják farkasfoguk fehérjét.

Rá kell ébrednem: minden élet börtön.
Még nem akaródzik beletörődnöm.
 

a hiding ember is burning me still,
but habit pulls me rather than the will.
 
What I pick up I gladly drop, and yet,
only the dead are those I don't forget.
 
If she I loved from me begins to steal,
I'd find no charm in her, she'd lack appeal,
 
not that she's worse since she began to steal -
she is what is, but loved, had more appeal.
 
I lately look not at the woods, but trees,
love's rate has since new growth, a new increase.
 
At this stage of ageing more and more
do I wish she'd be breaking down my door,
 
let her quench my thirst with knowledge I lack,
before the cover hardens on my back.
 
My fears are restless whilst they are asleep
hiding beneath escaped words by the heap.
 
Matters - though my five senses do protest -
are flashing snow white wolf teeth at the rest.
 
I must realise: all life's a prison cell.
Yet don't fancy to be resigned as well.
