József Attila: Ant (Hangya in English)

Portre of József Attila

Hangya (Hungarian)

A bábok között elaludt a hangya.

Szél, a bábokat most el ne fúdd!

1926 nyara

Ant (English)

Among the pupae the ant had gone to sleep.

Hear wind, don't scatter all the pupae!

Yet that would serve as well.

It leans its tiny head upon the loam,

his shadow by him also sleeps a spell.

Wake it with a straw, just nice and easy!

But better if we're starting off for home,

the clouds cover the land --

Among the pupae the ant had gone to sleep,

and - oops - a drop had fallen on my hand.
