József Attila: Walls (Falak in English)

Portre of József Attila

Falak (Hungarian)

Kopár szobám - kopárabb négy fala
Csupaszon, fázón mered az égnek.
Talán a kékes magasba vágynak,
Hol nem fú szél és csillagok égnek.

Őriznek engem, óvnak, szeretnek -
Kétoldalt egy-egy, hátul egy s elől.
- Ha meghalok, gondolom magamban,
E négy fal akkor rögtön összedől.

Föltámad akkor Anyjok a Szélvész,
Föltámad akkor Apjok a Vihar
S tetemem lassan betakargatják
A leomló falak poraival.

Walls (English)

Dreary my room, its four walls drearier,
Naked and cold, I stare up in the night
Perhaps they long for that blue, up yonder,
Where winds don't blow and stars provide the light.

They are guarding, protecting, they love me -
One on each side, and front and back: a wall,
- I think to myself: if I were to die,
Each of these four walls would suddenly fall.

Their mother, Tempest, would then be rising,
Their father, the Storm, would rise up as well,
And carefully, gently, cover my corpse
With the dust of the walls that fell.
