Kemény István: Dad's friends (Apa barátai in English)

Portre of Kemény István

Apa barátai (Hungarian)

Azon az egyetlen délelőttön,
a gyerekkoromban történt. Két
férfi jött a harmadikhoz
alapot ásni nála. Vidám
lakói a délelőttnek, hárman
a napsütésben. Az igazinak
vélt napsütésben srácnak
neveztek mind a hárman.
Csákánykapával, fürdőgatyában
dolgozni véltek, pedig dehogy.
Még sört sem ittak, vizet
vedeltek, s majdnem elkészültek
estig. A homokkupactól
figyeltük őket, én
és a lányaik.

Ó drága érdi férfiak, ti
Don Quijote de la Panzák, ti
pestvidéki küszködők. A
házatok kész azóta sem lett,
ilyen házban kell laknotok.
Mert lopni nem - vagy csak a
gyárból negyvenhat éves vackokat:
egy elnyírt fűrészt vagy egy
szivattyút, s otthon aztán évekig ezzel
mulattatni a talajvizet. Ti
majdnem munkás, szinte mérnök
Élet és Tudományt járatók, ti
megható találmányokra
költői annak, mit más a
sörre, borfőzők, ezüstcsinálók,
bottermelők és bárkaművesek.
Veletek éli le életét egy
valaha sorsra érdemes nő,
bólint az összes tervetekre,
hétköznap este bólogat,
nem eszik húst, és ásítozva
jógázik veletek évekig, de
vasárnap bontott téglát pucol
tíz évig nevetve-sírva-válva,
tíz évig összeszorítva száját,
de azóta már az életéről
van szó, és sírva tiltakozna -
hogy valaki tönkretette őt?!

Este a bárkáról volt szó, de főleg,
hogy mi minden kell a bárkára még:
áramfejlesztő, ködkürt, karám
és gombapince, sőt, óceán...?
Itt elaludtam, s ti nagyapák
lettetek azóta, emlékeim.

Dad's friends (English)

On that one-only morning...
happened in my childhood. Two
men came to dig foundations
at the third one’s place.
Cheery denizens of the morning,
three of them in the sunshine.
All three had called me bucko
in that honest-to-goodness sunshine.
They thought I was working
in swim-togs with a mattock. Far from it.
They didn't even drink beer, were guzzling water
and by evening were almost done.
Their girls and I
watched them
from beside a sand-heap.

Oh, dear men of Érd,
you Don Quixote de la Panzas,
you, strugglers from the city outskirts.
Your houses are still not completed,
and you must live in such houses.
For theft is out… except for
forty-six-year-old junk from the works:
a blunt saw or a pump, and then
you keep amusing the ground-water at home
with these for years. You, who are
almost labourers, yet almost engineers,
science journal subscribers,
spenders of money on
heart-stirring inventions, which others
spend on beer, you mulled wine producers,
sundry handymen.
A woman lives her whole life with you,
she, who once was worthy of destiny,
who nods agreement to all your plans,
keeps nodding off on weekday evenings,
does not eat meat and yawns
whilst doing yoga with you for years,
but on Sundays cleans reclaimed bricks
and for ten years laughs, cries, talks separation;
for ten years she holds it in,
but now it’s about her life,
and crying, she may protest…
that someone had been her ruin?!

That evening they talked about the barge,
but mostly about what else was needed:
inductor, fog horn, holding pen,
a mushroom cellar, or an ocean even…?
At this point I fell asleep, and since then
you became grandfathers: my memories,
