Külön-külön mind csöndes emberek,
Egy-egy tavaszból őszbe hajló ág,
Együtt: a katonák.

Külön-külön, úgy lehet, mindenik
Beleborzadna, mikor öldököl,
Együtt: egy rettentő, véres ököl.

Külön-külön halk, bús pásztortüzek,
Itt-ott csillan a lángjuk tétován,
Együtt: egy hömpölygő tűzóceán.

Magukra mind külön kis életek,
Fáradt ívük magasból mélybe száll,
Együtt, jaj együtt: a halál.
