Reményik Sándor: Funeral Oration To The Falling Leaves (Halotti beszéd a hulló leveleknek in English)

Portre of Reményik Sándor

Halotti beszéd a hulló leveleknek (Hungarian)

Látjátok feleim, hogy mik vagyunk?
Bizony bíbor és bronz és arany,
És örökkévaló szent szépség vagyunk.
Ahogy halódunk, hullunk nesztelen:
Bizony, e világ dőre, esztelen
Pompájánál nagyobb pompa vagyunk.
Nem történhetik velünk semmi sem,
Mi megronthatná szép, igaz-magunk.
Míg a fán vagyunk: napban ragyogunk
S ha alászállunk: vár a hűs avar,
Testvér-levél testvér-lombot takar,
Ott is otthon vagyunk.
Ha megkeményedünk és megfagyunk:
Zúzmara csillog rajtunk: hermelin.
Bíbor után a fehér hermelin.
Bizony szépek vagyunk.
Látjátok feleim, hogy mik vagyunk?
Ha végre földanyánk része leszünk,
Ott is szépek leszünk,
Ott is otthon leszünk.
És árvaság csak egy van, feleim:
Az erdőn kívül lenni.
Otthontalannak, hazátlannak lenni.
Nagyvárosok rideg utcakövén
A széltől sepertetni.
Sok más szeméttel összekevertetni.
Árvaság csak ez egy van, feleim.
S amíg itthon vagyunk:
Bizony bíbor és bronz és arany
És örökkévaló szent szépség vagyunk.

Funeral Oration To The Falling Leaves (English)

Can you see, my brethren what we are?
In fact purple, dark auburn and gold, and
eternal sacred love is what we are.
As we all die and fall down quietly:
yes, this world’s vain and foolish beauty,
can’t compare to our glory by far.
Nothing ever can happen to us here
to make our beautiful true-selves marred.
On the trees: we glow in sunny yards,
and as we fall: cool leaves await us,
brother-leaves hide brother- foliage,
we also feel at home there, unbroken.
When we become icy, stiff and frozen:
the hoar-frost glitters on us: ermine.
After the deep purple that white ermine.
Indeed gorgeous we are.
Can you see, my brethren what we are?
When at last we’re one with mother earth,
There we’ll be gorgeous, too,
There we’ll be at home, too.
Orphans only are those, my brethren:
who are outside the forest.
Who are homeless, nationless.
Those swept by the winds of the cities,
on cold cobble-stones of the streets.
Those mixed up with lots of other rubbish.
They are the only orphans, my brethren.
And as long as at home here we are,
in fact purple, dark auburn and gold, and
eternal sacred love is what we are.
