Kassák Lajos: Slaves (Rabszolgák in English)

Portre of Kassák Lajos

Nehéz szagú, sötét műhelyekben dolgoztak ezek az emberek és énekeltek;

ahelyett, hogy jókedvvel munkálkodnának, baromi erőfeszítéssel dolgoznak;
ahelyett, hogy óvnák magukat a bajoktól, esztelenül szaporodnak,
győzők és egyben legyőzöttek,
szülnek és eltemetik halottaikat
s közben a halálról és szerelemről énekelnek.

Slaves (English)

I was among strangers, who sang of death and love.
These men laboured in foul-smelling, dark workshops and they sang;
they towed ships in the harbour and sang,
they treaded the pedals of machines and sang
and if they had some free time left, they also sang,
they stood by themselves, arms folded, and sang of death and love.

Brothers, why are you so sad, I asked them,
and why do you long like this for love?
We do exactly what all men do, they replied.

I came to know brothers among strangers,
I saw that they are just like I am and live just like I do,
that instead of cheerfully working, they labour with beastly exertion;
instead of shielding themselves from trouble, they mindlessly multiply,
they are the vanquishers as well as the vanquished,
give birth and bury their dead
and in the meantime, they sing of death and love.
