Ladányi Mihály: My every word (Minden szavam in English)

Portre of Ladányi Mihály

Minden szavam (Hungarian)

Minden szavam úgy jön a napvilágra,

hogy nem te fürösztöd szádban legelőször -

Csúnya, kopaszodó, furcsa kis állat

vagyok, de fényes kerekek forognak

fejemben, s szívem hegesztőpisztolyától

összeforrna a széthulló világ.

Eszpresszókban és kávéházak alján

papírt teszek néha magam elé, de

édes nyálad hiányzik ceruzámról.

S mint paraszt, ki nem ehet kenyeréből,

úgy szórom el szerelmes szavamat

ebben az asszonyt-burjánzó pusztaságban.

My every word (English)

My every word comes, meets the light of day,

so you're not first to bathe it in your mouth -

I'm plain and balding, an eccentric beastie,

but shining wheels are turning in my head,

and the disintegrating world would fuse

from the welding torch flame within my heart.

Whilst in cafes and depths of coffeehouses

I sometimes put paper down before me,

but your sweet saliva is missing from my pencil.

And like a peasant not free to eat his bread,

I keep scattering loving words of mine

in this wench-proliferating barren wilderness.
