Day Lewis, Cecil: Magnetic Mountain (detail)

Portre of Day Lewis, Cecil

Magnetic Mountain (detail) (English)

Part Two / 6.

Nearing again the legendary isle
Where sirens sang and mariners were skinned,
We wonder now what was there to beguile
That such stout fellows left their bones behind.

Those chorus-girls are surely past their prime,
Voices grow shrill and paint is wearing thin,
Lips that sealed up the sense from gnawing time
Now beg the favour with a graveyard grin.

We have no flesh to spare and they can’t bite,
Hunger and sweat have stripped us to the bone;
A skeleton crew we toil upon the tide
And mock the theme-song meant to lure us on:

No need to stop the ears, avert the eyes
From purple rhetoric of evening skies.

Mágneshegy (részlet) (Hungarian)

Második rész / 6.

Közelg a bűvös sziget, hol szirének
zsongtak... Ott nyúzták a matrózokat.
Csodáljuk most: beh szép, erős legények!
Mi vitte rá itthagyni csontjukat?

E lánykórus elfonnyadt, beh pocsék lett!
Hangjuk sipít, a sminkjük megkopott.
Ajkukra az idő nyomott pecsétet.
Hulla-vigyorral csókot koldulnak ott.

Nem féltjük már husunk. Nem is harapnak.
Éhség, veríték már csontig lemart...
Csontváz-legénység, dőlünk a dolognak,
s gúnyoljuk a csábító témadalt:

Ne tömd füled, szemed se zárd le ma!
Nem árt az est-ég rőt szónoklata.
