Gay, John: Blouzelinda temetése (részlet) (The Shepherd's Week: Friday; or, The Dirge (detail) Magyar nyelven)

Gay, John portréja

The Shepherd's Week: Friday; or, The Dirge (detail) (Angol)

To show their love, the neighbours far and near,

Followed with wistful look the damsel's bier.

Sprigg'd rosemary the lads and lasses bore,

While dismally the parson walk'd before.

Upon her grave the rosemary they threw,

The daisy, butter-flower, and endive blue.

After the good man warn'd us from his text,

That none could tell whose turn would be the next;

He said, that heaven would take her soul, no doubt,

And spoke the hour-glass in her praise - quite out.

To her sweet memory flowery garlands strung,

O'er her now empty seat aloft were hung.

With wicker rods we fenc'd her tomb around,

To ward from man and beast the hallow'd ground,

Lest her new grave the parson's cattle raze,

For both his horse and cow the church-yard graze.

Now we trudg'd homeward to her mother's farm,

To drink new cyder mull'd, with ginger warm.

For gaffer Tread-well told us by the by,

'Excessive sorrow is exceeding dry.'

While bulls bear horns upon their curled brow,

Or lasses with soft stroakings milk the cow,

While pudling ducks the standing lake desire,

Or battening hogs roll in the sinking mire;

Whole moles the crumbling earth in hillocks raise,

So long shall swains tell Blouzelinda's praise.

Thus wail'd the louts in melancholy strain,

'Till bonny Susan sped across the plain;

They seiz'd the lass in apron clean array'd,

And to the ale-house forc'd the willing maid,

In ale and kisses they forget their cares,

And Susan Blouzelinda's loss repairs.

Blouzelinda temetése (részlet) (Magyar)

A szomszédhad ment a kocsi után,

búsult, hogy meghalt a kedves leány.

Virágot vitt a lyány- s legénysereg,

elől komoran a pap lépkedett.

A sírra hullt sok rozmaringos ág,

százszorszépek és kék endíviák.

Majd jó papunk szólt figyelmeztetőn:

nem tudni, ki lesz a következő;

e leány lelke bizton égbe száll -

s dicsérte hosszan, nem pihent a száj.

Emlékét — ha üres is már helye —

megőrzi majd mindannyiunk szive.

A szentelt halom köré ágakat

fontunk, ne érhesse ember, se vad;

nehogy a pap lova s barma a sírt

szétrúgják, ha legelnek idekint.

Majd a holtas házhoz mentünk, ahol

meleg gyömbér várt s forralt almabor.

A gazda folyvást bizonygatta, hogy

hol nagy a bánat, száraz a torok.

Amíg csak szarv nő a bika fején,

s a tőgyéből tejet ád a tehén,

amíg vízben totyognak a kacsák,

s kövér disznók lakják a pocsolyát,

amíg túrni látunk vakondokot,

Zelindát dicsérik a pásztorok.

Busongtak biz a legények nagyon,

mikor a szép Zsuzsi jött az uton;

karon ragadták s elvitték a lányt

a korcsmába, mit az csöppet se bánt.

Sör s csókok között a bú eltűnik,

ha nincs is Zelinda — vannak Zsuzsik.
