Or, sometimes, at first light, would we climb down from our iron bedstead in dressing-gowns, and sit at the windows feeling the river, rising and dark, at the end of the garden; hear the fuchsias open in the dew under the leaking tank-stand, the leaves move on the walls, the clock without hands tick under the blue convolvulus...
Our arms wrapped round each other, trembling at the open windows like ancient shadows, the batteries run down, the typewriters silent, would we go to our unremembered graves in the Pinjarra churchyard, under the mullioned windows without a single cry...

Vagy olykor hajnalban felkelnénk-e vaságyunkból, és köntösben kiülnénk-e az ablakba, hogy érezzük a kert végében duzzadó sötét folyót, halljuk a harmatban nyíló fuksziákat a csöpögő víztartály mellett, a falon zizegő leveleket, és a mutatók nélkül ketyegő órákat a kék folyondár alatt...
Amikor egymás köré font karral remegünk a nyitott ablakban, mint régi árnyak, az elemek lemerültek, az írógép hallgat vajon eljutnánk-e saját névtelen sírunkba a pinjarrai temetőben, a boltíves ablakok alá egyetlen kiáltás nélkül...
