Sweeney, Matthew: The Bats

Sweeney, Matthew portréja

The Bats (Angol)

The bats live in the old television aerials.
I hear them above me at night, and sometimes
one will blunder through the broken window,
glancing off me or the bulb, his sonar gone.

Since the hot weather, the parks are clay.
It’s good to be up here, on the 13th floor
as the wind dips no lower, and when it rains
the two basins I leave on the roof get filled.

I’m clean, I drink, and I’ve a net for birds.
The lift broke last year so I don’t get down
to the street much, and I don’t have strength
to fight the market crowds for State rations.

From here I see the city, and the hills beyond
where I went often when the buses ran
though I try not to think of the dead years,
dead from the day they took the telephone.

If I could vote now I’d head the queue
but it’s as likely as hearing a bat speak.
A million Xs would have stopped their march
but who can loudly say he saw it coming?

I open the door to no one, I make no sound.
Ignore them: they may leave you alone.
I still have my books that I saved to read
and the bulb still comes on from ten to twelve.

Up on the roof at midday I sit in the shade
of a chimney, and I drink the breeze
while the bats hang from the aerials,
immune to the heat, to the unnatural height, to me.

I think, then, of the bats as companions.
There is one I watch more than the rest –
already I cross the roof to touch his head,
when he moves in his sleep I back away.

Down below I stay close to the window
and pluck my wrens in the afternoon
then hang them from the ex-telephone wire
while I snitch my four hours of sleep.

A denevérek (Magyar)

A denevérek fenn laknak az antennákon.
Éjjel hallom őket a fejem fölött, olykor
betéved valamelyik a kitört ablakon, lepattan
rólam vagy a körtéről, megy a szonár után.

A hőségben a park cserepes agyag.
Jó idefönt, a tizenharmadikon,
a szél nem bukik lejjebb, ha meg esik,
megtelik a tetőn hagyott két lavórom.

Tiszta vagyok, iszom, van madárhálóm.
Tavaly elromlott a lift, úgyhogy utcára
nem nagyon megyek, nem bírom
azt a vásári tülekedést a fejadagért.

Innen jól látom a várost meg a dombokat,
ahova, míg voltak buszok, gyakran jártam,
bár a halott évekre, mert belehaltak, hogy
elvették a telefont, inkább nem gondolok.

Ha most szavazhatnék, én vezetném a sort,
de hamarabb beszélne egy denevér.
Egymillió X, és most nem menetelnének,
de ki állíthatná hangosan, hogy látta előre?

Nem nyitok ajtót, nem adok hangot.
Ne törődj velük: talán békén hagynak.
Még itt vannak a félretett könyveim,
és tíztől tizenkettőig visszatér az áram is.

Délben a tetőn kiülök az árnyékba,
a kéményhez, belekortyolok a szélbe,
az antennákról lógnak a denevérek,
a hőségre, a magasra és rám is immúnisak.

Hát a denevéreket tekintem társaimnak.
Az egyiket különösen sokat néztem –
átvágok a tetőn, hogy megsimítsam,
s elhátrálok, ha megmoccan álmában.

Lent az ablakom közelében maradok,
az ökörszemeket délután kopasztom,
felaggatom őket a néhai telefon zsinórjára,
és lopva kialszom azt a négy-négy órát.
