performed at the Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich (31 March, 1916);

and published in Cabaret Voltaire (June 1916).

The admiral looks for a house to rent

(Note for the bourgeois)

The experiments in the transmutation of objects and
colours by the first Cubist painters – Picasso, Braque,
Picabia, Duchamp-Villon and Delaunay – stimulated the
desire to apply the same simultaneous principles in
poetry.
Villiers de l’Isle Adam had parallel ideas in the
theatre, with tendencies towards a schematic
simultaneism; Mallarme tried typographic reform in his
poem  A Throw of the Dice will never Abolish Chance;
Marinetti popularised this application in his  Words in
Freedom; the intentions of Blaise Cendrars and Jules
Romain, most recently, directed Monsieur Apollinaire to
the ideas he developed in his lecture published in Sturm
in 1912. But the first idea, essentially, was exteriorised
by Monsieur Henri Barzun in a theoretical book, Voice,
Rhythms and Simultaneous Songs, where he looked for a
more direct relationship between the polyrhythmic
symphony and the poem. To the principle of succession
in lyrical poetry he opposed a parallel, vast idea. But his
ambition to deepen this technique (with Universal
Theatre) – by exaggerating its value to the point of
conferring on it a new ideology and cloistering it in the
exclusivity of a school – failed.
At the same time, Monsieur Apollinaire experimented
with a new genre of visual poem, which is even more
interesting because of its lack of a system and its
tormented fantasy. It accentuates the central images
typographically and offers the possibility of starting to
read the poem from every side at once. The poems of
Messieurs Barzun and Divoire are purely formal. They
seek a musical effect by making the same abstractions as
a musical score.

***

I wanted to realise a poem based on other principles.
These consist of the possibility given to each listener of
making links between appropriate associations. He
retains the characteristic elements of his personality,
mixes them, the fragments, etc, while at the same time
remaining in the direction the author has channelled.
The poem that I have arranged (with Huelsenbeck
and Janco) does not provide a musical description, but
attempts to individualise the impression of the
simultaneous poem to which we thereby give a new
dimension.
The parallel reading that we gave on 31 March, 1916,
Huelsenbeck, Janco and I, delivered simultaneously  in
three different languages, German, English and French,
was the first staged performance of this modern
aesthetic.

Az admirális kiadó házat keres

(Jegyzet a kispolgárnak)

***
