Ady Endre: Kis, karácsonyi ének

Portre of Ady Endre

Kis, karácsonyi ének (Hungarian)

Tegnap harangoztak,

Holnap harangoznak,

Holnapután az angyalok

Gyémánt-havat hoznak.

Szeretném az Istent

Nagyosan dicsérni,

De én még kisfiu vagyok,

Csak most kezdek élni.

Isten-dicséretre

Mégiscsak kiállok,

De boldogok a pásztorok

S a három királyok.

Én is mennék, mennék,

Énekelni mennék,

Nagyok között kis Jézusért

Minden szépet tennék.

Új csizmám a sárban

Százszor bepiszkolnám,

Csak az Úrnak szerelmemet

Szépen igazolnám.

(Így dúdolgattam én

Gyermek-hittel, bátran,

1883

Csúf karácsonyában.)

A little Christmas song (English)

Yesterday the bells rang,

Tomorrow more ringing,

Day after that the angels will

Diamond snows be bringing.

I'd like to give God praise

Like grown-ups are giving,

But I'm still a tiny lad, I

Barely started living.

When praising God, I’ll stand,

Upon my feet I’ll be,

How joyful are the shepherds all,

As are the Magi three.

I would go, I would go,

I, too, would go and sing,

With the grown-ups for wee Jesus,

I would do everything.

My new boots I’d muddy

A hundred times with ease,

But my passion for the Lord I’d

Prove to Him to please.

(I was crooning like this

With childish faith and bold,

At Christmas, Eighteen eighty-three,

Which was unpleasant, cold.)
