The grafting-knife of God (Angol)You, my Lord, you gave to quite a few More money, health, success, Yet for this I will not start to sue, Nor say that you're my debtor nonetheless.
I'm not the first, you've had stepsons before, Your knife between my ribs: let it be blessed, I smile at fools who meet with anger woes And vainly beat themselves upon the chest.
I know and feel you loved me from the start: Your grafting knife in me, its cut and lop, Serves you, for whilst it's injuring my heart, The wounding brings new beauty to the crop.
I clench my lips when pain is hard to bear, Because I know the battles that I wreak Are yours, and at the far-off wins I stare With tear-enhanced face, glowing like your cheek!
