Biography

Born 1910 in Budapest. Poet, translator, publicist. His free translation of Villon's ballads in 1937 created much controversy. Emigrated to France in 1939, from where he went to Africa in 1940 and to the United States in 1941. Returned to Hungary in 1946, where poems written during emigration were published the following year. Imprisoned in early 1950's and released in 1953. Again linked himself to literary life through publication of articles and poems. Defected in 1956 and went to London, where he became editor of Irodalmi Újság. His writings are deeply concerned with problems of contemporary Hungary.
