Des Morgens kannst du noch den Schmerz bezwingen,

Der Tag ist jung, und frisch ist deine Kraft,                  

Und etwas Glanz liegt noch auf allen Dingen,              

Der dir auch Mut und neues Hoffen schafft.               

 

Doch wenn die dunklen Stunden näher schleichen     

Wie gierige Tiere, die mit tückischem Blick               

Sich nahn — fühlst du dir allen Mut entweichen        

Und eine Angst dich packen im Genick.                     

 

Und kommt die Nacht, die große, dunkle Schlange,

Legt sie sich wieder würgend um dein Herz

Und trinkt dein Blut mit ungestilltem Drange,

Und so allnächtlich wachst und schwillt dein Schmerz.

Reggel fájdalmat még tartod kordában,

Fiatal a nap, és friss az erőd,

S valami fény csillan minden dologban,

Bátorságot s új reményt hoz elő.

 

De ha sötét estóra közel kerül

Mint éhes állat, s a szája rád vicsorít,

A bátorságod, érzed, elmenekül,

S a félelem téged nyakon szorít.

 

S nagy, sötét kígyóként jön majd az éjjel,

Fekszik szíved köré fojtogatón,

S a véred issza olthatatlan kéjjel,

S fájdalmad éjenként nő duzzadón.
