Des Morgens kannst du noch den Schmerz bezwingen,

Der Tag ist jung, und frisch ist deine Kraft,                  

Und etwas Glanz liegt noch auf allen Dingen,              

Der dir auch Mut und neues Hoffen schafft.               

 

Doch wenn die dunklen Stunden näher schleichen     

Wie gierige Tiere, die mit tückischem Blick               

Sich nahn — fühlst du dir allen Mut entweichen        

Und eine Angst dich packen im Genick.                     

 

Und kommt die Nacht, die große, dunkle Schlange,

Legt sie sich wieder würgend um dein Herz

Und trinkt dein Blut mit ungestilltem Drange,

Und so allnächtlich wachst und schwillt dein Schmerz.

Még reggel kínod csak-csak elnyomod,

Mert fiatal a nap, s erőd akad,                  

És csillogóbbnak látszik sok dolog,              

Ez bátorságot, s új reményt fakaszt.               

 

De szürkület jön, lopódzkodó fajta,

Mohó jószág, arcán révület,

közel jön – és habár szemed rajta,

Tarkón ragad már a rémület.

 

S ha itt az éj, a sötét, álnok kígyó,

Szíved körbefonja, és szorít.

Véred ontja, csak, mert neki így jó,

S te érzed éjjel terjedni a kínt.
