Er zittert oben hoch auf dem Kamel

In einem roten Rock auf seinem Brette.

Er klettert schnell herab auf den Befehl

Und schleift am Fuße nach die dünne Kette.

 

Er hüpft auf einem Bein. Er schlägt behende

Das Tamburin und bläst auf der Schalmei.

Dann geht er ab den Kreis und streckt die Hände

Nach Pfennigen aus, und dankt wie ein Lakai.

 

In seinem Auge rollt ein Feuer, weiß

Kalt wie ein Frosch, und seine Stirn gerinnt

In viele Runzeln, wie ein Greis

Uralt, und wie ein neugebornes Kind.

A majom (Hungarian)

Odafent ül és reszket, a tevén,

piros kabátban, deszka-nyerge hátán.

A parancsra lemászik könnyedén

és vékony láncát húzza a bokáján.

 

Féllábon ugrál. Majd zenél: öreg

tamburát ver, és fuvolája dalt zsong.

Végül tányéroz s a filléreket

sorra köszönve lakájmódra hajlong.

 

Szemében fehér tűz gyúl és rohan,

és hideg, mint egy béka; mély redők

zsugorítják arcát: most olyan, mint egy ujszülött.
