Spotted Tongue (English)

I seem to have forgotten 
the loving words
my mother must have once spoken.
 
Now only her harshest words return to me –
both in day and night dreams.
 
Her words flowed out
with remarkable eloquence
laced with lacerating venom.
 
When my mother could speak
her humour was rib-tickling
her spontaneity for Tamil proverbs 
legendary.
 
When my mother could speak
I sometimes wished she wouldn’t.
 
Her words could sear and scar,
cut through you and make you bleed.
 
Her silence now
makes me wonder:
Has my wish come true?
 
Or is this the price of having said
just a little too much?
 
Did she offend someone with a spotted tongue?

Úgy tűnik, elfeledtem
a gyengéd szavakat,
amelyeket anyám régen használt.
 
Már csak a legkeményebbek jönnek elő –
nappali és éjjeli álmaimban egyaránt.
 
Ragyogón
és simán folyt belőle a szó,
és finoman epét csepegtetett bele.
 
Mikor anyám még beszélt,
humora az oldalunkat csiklandozta,
és legendásan tudott közbeszúrni
tamil mondásokat.
 
Mikor még beszélt anyám,
néha azt kívántam, bárcsak ne tenné.
 
A szavai perzseltek és martak,
és úgy vágtak beléd, hogy a véred kiserkent.
  
Ez a mostani csendje
elgondolkodtat:
Az én kívánságom teljesülhetett?
  
Vagy ez az ára annak,
hogy kicsivel többet beszélt a kelleténél?
  
Ronda beszédével tán megbántott valakit?
