Dickinson, Emily: Nem szánandó ki vízbe fúl (Drowning is not so pitiful in Hungarian)

Portre of Dickinson, Emily

Drowning is not so pitiful (English)

Drowning is not so pitiful
As the attempt to rise
Three times, 'tis said, a sinking man
Comes up to face the skies,
And then declines forever
To that abhorred abode,
Where hope and he part company —
For he is grasped of God.
The Maker's cordial visage,
However good to see,
Is shunned, we must admit it,
Like an adversity.

Nem szánandó ki vízbe fúl (Hungarian)

Nem szánandó ki vízbe fúl
Csak mikor mászna fel
Háromszor, úgymond, felmerül,
Szemet égnek emel,
És csúszik végleg lefelé,
Rémlak vár rá, rideg,
Hol elválnak ő s a remény —
Mert Isten menti meg.
Teremtőnk arca lágy, meleg,
Barátságos varázs,
Mégis mindünket elriaszt,
Akár egy sorscsapás.
