Emerson, Ralph Waldo: Kegyelem (Grace in Hungarian)

Portre of Emerson, Ralph Waldo

Grace (English)

How much, preventing God, how much I owe
To the defences thou hast round me set;
Example, custom, fear, occasion slow,-
These scorned bondmen were my parapet.
I dare not peep over this parapet
To gauge with glance the roaring gulf below,
The depths of sin to which I had descended,
Had not these me against myself defended.

Kegyelem (Hungarian)

Gondos Isten! köszönnöm mily nehéz,
Hogy körém raktál bölcs támfalakat:
Példa, szokás, gátlás, késlekedés,
Mint korlát, e páriák tartanak.
Rettegnék látni, e korlát alatt
Mit vesz ki a szem, míg örvénybe néz,
Vagy a bűnbe, hová egykor leestem,
Ha ők nem óvnának önmagam ellen.
