Heaney, Seamus: Toomebridge (Toomebridge in Hungarian)

Portre of Heaney, Seamus
Portre of Tótfalusi István

Back to the translator

Toomebridge (English)

Where the flat water

Came pouring over the weird out of Lough Neagh

As if it had reached an edge of the flat earth

And fallen shining to the continuous

Present of the Bann.

Where the checkpoint used to be.

Where the rebel boy was hanged in '98.

Where negative ions in the open air

Are poetry to me. As once before

The slime and silver of the fattened eel.

Toomebridge (Hungarian)

Ahol a sík víz

Átömölt a gáton a Lough Neagh felől

Mintha a sík föld szélére elérve

Zuhogna fénylőn a Bann

Folyamatos jelenébe.

Ahol egykor az ellenőrző pont állt.

Ahol a lázadó fiút ’98-ban felkötötték.

Ahol a tág levegő negatív ionjai

A költészet nekem. Mint valaha rég

A hízott angolna nyálkás ezüstje.
