Meredith, George: Erdei gyász (Dirge in Woods in Hungarian)

Portre of Meredith, George
Portre of Fodor András

Back to the translator

Dirge in Woods (English)

A wind sways the pines,

And below

Not a breath of wild air;

Still as the mosses that glow

On the flooring and over the lines

Of the roots here and there.

The pine-tree drops its dead;

They are quiet, as under the sea.

Overhead, overhead

Rushes life in a race,

As the clouds the clouds chase;

And we go,

And we drop like the fruits of the tree,

Even we,

Even so.

Erdei gyász (Hungarian)

Fenyőn zúg a szél,

s odalent

a vad ár lecsitul;

halk, mint moha, mely dereng

parazsával a fák tövinél,

s gyökerekre simul.

Halált hullat az ág;

fedi mélyvízi csenddel a zöld.

Fenn, tág egen át

rohan, elfut a lét,

felhők versenyekép;

vonulunk, — s ahogy hull a gyümölcs,

húz a föld,
