MacLeish, Archibald: Ars Poetica (Ars Poetica in Hungarian)

Portre of MacLeish, Archibald

Ars Poetica (English)

A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,

Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown --

A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds.

                    *

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs,

Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind --

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs.

                    *

A poem should be equal to
Not true.

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf.

For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea --

A poem should not mean
But be.

Ars Poetica (Hungarian)

Legyen tapintható és hangtalan a vers,
Mint gömbölyű gyümölcs,

Néma,
Mint hüvelykujjnak érmek régi féme,

Csöndes mint egy kopott szegélyű kő
egy párkányé ahol moha nő -

Legyen a vers szótlan
Mint a madarak szárnyalóban.

                *

Legyen mozdulatlan az időben,
Ahogy a hold jön fel,

Távozzon úgy, ahogy a fákról oldja
Az éjt, gally gally után, le a hold.

Távozzon úgy, ahogy a tél mögött a hold fenn,
A lélekből, emlék emlék után.-

Legyen mozdulatlan az időben,
Ahogy a hold jön fel.

                *

Legyen a vers ugyanaz,
Ne igaz.

A minden fájdalmak láncolatára
Egy üres kapualj meg egy cserfa ága.

A szerelemre
A meggyűrt füvek és két fény a tengeren -

Ne arról szóljon a vers.
de az legyen.
