MacLeish, Archibald: Ars Poetica (Ars Poetica in Hungarian)

Portre of MacLeish, Archibald

Ars Poetica (English)

A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,

Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown --

A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds.

                    *

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs,

Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind --

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs.

                    *

A poem should be equal to
Not true.

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf.

For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea --

A poem should not mean
But be.

Ars Poetica (Hungarian)

A vers legyen tapintható és néma
Mint egy pompás gyümölcs,

Néma
Mint patinás érmek becéző ujjaknak,

Néma, mint simára kopott kövek
Miket a moha már régen belepett -

A vers legyen csöndes
Mint madarak röpte.

                        *

Legyen állandóság a rohanásban
Mint a hold lassú járása,

Engedjen el, amint a hold útját járva
Gallyanként engedi el az éj-ölelte fákat,

Távozzon – mint hold a kopár téli fák mögé -
Fejünkből lassan halványuló emlékenként -

A vers legyen állandóság a rohanásban
Mint a hold lassú járása.

                        *

A vers ne csak
Igaz legyen.

A világ örökös bánatáért
Egy üres kapualj és egy juharlevél.

A szerelemért, lágyan hullámzó fűszálak
S az égen felragyogó csillagok párban -

A vers ne üzenjen,
Legyen.
