And Love I laugh to scorn;
And lust of fame was but a dream,
That vanished with the morn:

And if I pray, the only prayer

Is, „Leave the heart that now I bear,
And give me liberty!"

Yes, as my swift days near their goal:
„Tis all that I implore ;

Gazdagságot nem becsülök,

szerelmet gúnyolok;

hírnév álmai, gyors ködök,

visznek a hajnalok.

 

S ha imádkozom, nem lehet

más fohász ajkamon:

„Hagyd el, mit hordok, e szívet,

tűnhessek szabadon!"

 

Érezvén fogyó napokat,

csakis ezt kérhetem:

„Ó, élve-halva, adj szabad,

tűrő lelket nekem!"
