Crashaw, Richard: Férj s feleség sírfelirata: meghaltak, s együtt temették el őket (An Epitaph upon Husband and Wife who died and were buried together in Hungarian)

Portre of Crashaw, Richard

An Epitaph upon Husband and Wife who died and were buried together (English)

To these, whom death again did wed,

This grave’s the second marriage-bed.

For though the hand of fate could force

Twixt soul and body a divorce,

It could not sunder man and wife,

Because they both lived but one life.

Peace, good reader, Do not weep.

Peace, the lovers are asleep.

They, sweet turtles, folded lie

In the last knot love could tie.

And though they lie as they were dead,

Their pillow stone, their sheets of lead,

(Pillow hard, and sheets not warm),

Love made the bed; they’ll take no harm;

Let them sleep, let them sleep on.

Till this stormy night be gone,

Till the eternal morrow dawn;

Then the curtains will be drawn

And they wake into a light,

Whose day shall never die in night.

Férj s feleség sírfelirata: meghaltak, s együtt temették el őket (Hungarian)

Köti őket ismét Haláluk,

e sír második nászi ágyuk.

Mert igaz, a Test és a Lélek

választója lehet a Végzet,

férjjel s nőjével tehetetlen,

hiszen két életük: egyetlen.

Ne sírj hát — csitt, jó olvasó!

Itt e Szeretők álma jó.

Gerlepárt, köti odalenn

őket a végső szerelem.

S bár színleg holtak, s kő a párna,

s ólom a nyughely takarása

(az kemény, ez nem melegít):

Szerelem ágyazott nekik.

Nyugodtan hadd aludjanak,

míg e viharos éj apad,

s az örök Hajnal partja virrad;

függöny lebben, tárul az ablak,

s jő az örök fény nappala,

melyre nem borul éjszaka.
