Day Lewis, Cecil: Kibékülés (Reconciliation in Hungarian)

Portre of Day Lewis, Cecil
Portre of Somlyó György

Back to the translator

Reconciliation (English)

All day beside the shattered tank he’d lain

Like a limp creature hacked out of its shell,

Now shrivelling on the desert’s grid,

Now floating above a sharp-set ridge of pain.

There came a roar, like water, in his ear.

The mortal dust was laid. He seemed to be lying

In cool coffin of stone walls,

While memory slid towards a plunging weir.

The time that was, the time that migh have been

Find in this shell of stone a chance to kiss

Before they part eternally:

He feels a world without, a world within

Wrestle like old antagonists, until each is

Balancing each. Then, in a heavenly calm,

The lock gates open, and beyond

Appear the argent, swan-assembled reaches.

Kibékülés (Hungarian)

Estig a kilőtt tank mellett feküdt,

mint egy kagylójából kivert puhány,

hol a sivatag rácsán sülve, hol

lebegve a kin örvénye fölött.

S zúgás ért a fülébe mintha vízé.

Elült a halandó por. S mintha csak

egy hideg kőkoporsóban feküdne,

míg emléke egy régi gátra .vinné.

Oda, hol e kő-kagyló színhelyül

szolgálhatott volna talán a csóknak,

mielőtt végleg válni kell:

úgy érzi, két világ vív, egy belül

s egy kívül, ős-ellenek, kik soha

nem győzhetik le egymást. Égi béke –

s megnyílik a zsilip, s mögötte a

hattyúk-járta táj ezüst távlata.
