Gibson, Wilfrid Wilson: Panasz (Lament in Hungarian)

Portre of Gibson, Wilfrid Wilson
Portre of Kálnoky László

Back to the translator

Lament (English)

We who are left, how shall we look again

Happily on the sun or feel the rain

Without remembering how they who went

Ungrudgingly and spent

Their lives for us loved, too, the sun and rain?

A bird among the rain-wet lilac sings –

But we, how shall we turn to little things

And listen to the birds and winds and streams

Made holy by their dreams,

Nor feel the heart-break in the heart of things?

Panasz (Hungarian)

Hogyan nézzük mi, életben-levők,

boldogan a napfényt vagy az esőt,

feledve mindet, ki lelkesedett,

s helyettünk elesett,

s szintén szerette a napfényt meg esőt?

Ázott orgonák közt madár dalolgat –

De hogy hihetnénk ezt komoly dolognak?

S hallgatva álmaiktól szent madárkát,

szellőt s csermelyt, ne látnánk

mély keservet mélyén minden dolognak?
