Beattie, James: Mint te (An Epitaph in Hungarian)

Portre of Beattie, James
Portre of Szabó Lőrinc

Back to the translator

An Epitaph (English)

Like thee I once have stemm’d the sea of life,

Like thee have languish’d after empty joys,

Like thee have labour’d in the stormy strife,

Been grieved for trifles, and amused with toys.

Forget my frailties; thou art also frail:

Forgive my lapses; for thyself may’st fall:

Nor read unmoved my artless tender tale –

I was a friend, O man, to thee, to all.

Mint te (Hungarian)

Mint te, szeltem a tengert a viharban;

mint te, lankadtam üres kéj után;

mint te, küzdöttem én is szakadatlan:

sírtam ok nélkül, nevettem bután.

Felejtsd hibámat: tán benned is ott van;

gyönge lehetsz: nézd el gyöngéimet;

s dobbanjon meg szíved... Barátod voltam,

óh, ember, neked, és mindenkinek.
