Simic, Charles: Villa (Fork in Hungarian)

Portre of Simic, Charles

Back to the translator

Fork (English)

This strange thing must have crept

Right out of hell.

It resembles a bird’s foot

Worn around the cannibal’s neck.

As you hold it in your hand,

As you stab with it into a piece of meat,

It is possible to imagine the rest of the bird:

Its head which like your fist

Is large, bald, beakless, and blind.

Villa (Hungarian)

Ez a furcsa szerszám alighanem

A pokolból keveredett közénk.

Madárlábra hasonlít, amit

Egy kannibál a nyakában viselt.

Ha kézbe veszed,

Ha beleszúrsz vele egy darab húsba,

A madár többi része is jól elképzelhető:

A feje mint az öklöd,

Nagy kopasz, csőrtelen és vak.
