Thomson, James: Uralgj, Britannia (Rule Britannia in Hungarian)

Portre of Thomson,  James
Portre of Radó Antal

Rule Britannia (English)

When Britain first, at heaven's command,
    Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of the land,
    And guardian angels sung this strain -
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

The nations, not so blest as thee,
    Must in their turns to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
    The dread and envy of them all.
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
    More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies
    Serves but to root thy native oak.
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame;
    All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame,
    But work their woe and thy renown.
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

To thee belongs the rural reign;
    Thy cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
    And every shore it circles thine.
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

The Muses, still with freedom found,
    Shall to thy happy coast repair:
Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned,
    And manly hearts to guard the fair.
       "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves;
       Britons never will be slaves."

Uralgj, Britannia (Hungarian)

Midőn a britt föld, égi szóra,
A tenger mélyiből kikelt,
Ez volt a hitlevélbe’ róla,
Mit angyal-kórus énekelt:
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

Sok nép, mely mint te, nincs megáldva,
Majd kényur-láncokat cipel:
Te nagy, szabad léssz, s a világba’
Mindenki fél és irigyel.
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

Ha érzed is más nép csapásit,
Dicsőbben támadsz újra föl,
Mint tölgyed izmosodni látszik
A vésztül, amely rája tör.
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

A gőgös zsarnok nem bir véled,
S ha mégis megpróbálja majd:
Tüzed csak annál jobban éled
S fényt hoz reád - magára jajt!
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

Falun a gabonád, városidba’
Kereskedelmed gazdagít;
A tenger néked tárva-nyitva,
És úrként járod partjait.
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

Hol a szabadság szűz legébe’
A múzsa boldogan tanyáz,
Sziget! mit hű fiaktól védve
Páratlan szépség koronáz :
Légy úr, Britannia, bárhol zúg a hab!
Brittből nem lesz soha rab!

Angol hazafias dal, melynek refrénje így szól: Rule Britannia, rule the waves (Uralkodjál Britannia a habok felett). Szövegét Thomson, zenéjét pedig Arne írta. Ma az angol flotta és hadsereg használja.
