Poe, Edgar Allan: Bálint-napi vers (A Valentine in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan
Portre of Tandori Dezső

Back to the translator

A Valentine (English)

For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,
Brightly expressive as the twins of Leda,
Shall find her own sweet name, that nestling lies
Upon the page, enwrapped from every reader.
Search narrowly the lines!- they hold a treasure
Divine- a talisman- an amulet
That must be worn at heart. Search well the measure-
The words- the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor
And yet there is in this no Gordian knot
Which one might not undo without a sabre,
If one could merely comprehend the plot.
Enwritten upon the leaf where now are peering
Eyes scintillating soul, there lie perdus
Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing
Of poets, by poets- as the name is a poet's, too,
Its letters, although naturally lying
Like the knight Pinto- Mendez Ferdinando-
Still form a synonym for Truth- Cease trying!
You will not read the riddle, though you do the best you can do.

Bálint-napi vers (Hungarian)

Fogadja ő e dalt, a tűz-szemű
- Irígy lenne két láng-ikrére Léda! -;
Ím, adja-rejtse szép nevét e mű
(Bár nagyralátó, célja mégse léha).
Nézd csak meg jól e sorokat: talizmán
Bújt meg bennük: a szív szent földi kincse.
Mérték, szó, szótag rejti? Nem alítván
A helyet, szemed fontosnak tekintse
E vers legapróbb részét is, különben
Mihaszna erőlködsz. Nincs itt csomó,
Kardél-váró gordiuszi. Előnyben
Az, ki rálel az elvre. Csillogó
Szempár! e lapon, mint lélek-tükörben,
Látsz három szót, mely bár itt eltünő,
Ékkel ragyog, bizony, költői körben:
Viselője egy szép s - poéta-nő!
Ha minden betű hazug is, vigyázz! a
Látszat csal - ó, Fernão Pinto Mendes[3]! -:
Színigaz itt a tartalom.

[3] Portugál szójátékra utal: Mendes Fernão Pinto, XVI. századi utazó, mesélő - amolyan Münchausen báró - nevét a hasonló hangzás alapján kérdés-felelet játék formában értelmezték: "Fernão, mentes? Minto.", azaz: "Hazudsz, Fernão? Hazudok." Minthogy amikor beismerte, hogy hazudik, igazat mondott, így az igazmondás példaképe lett.
