It comes at you out of nowhere, with 'Hello, Muggins!
You still here?' or 'Myers was travelling through
Europe on his way to Strasbourg,' the sense of time
unravelling without you, the possibilities
of what might happen if you did nothing
running neck and neck with your attention span
in a sack race for the dead. It's too like life:
unwarranted enthusiasm somehow using itself up
in time for the end to happen, as when, on Speech Day,
the Head Boy comes to the front of the stage
to thank the staff for making it all possible
and us for bearing with him, in spite of the seating.
