Beaver, Bruce: 11. nap (Day 11 in Hungarian)

Portre of Beaver, Bruce

Day 11 (English)

The perfume of carnations –

of doves and something

far sweeter than cloves –

an almost manufactured

essence, a floral liqueur.

I prefer carnations to every

other flower because

they seem artificial,

inorganic, almost perfect,

an ideal abstraction of

flowerdom, apparently

as long-lasting as the famed

jade leaf of the Chinese

carver who almost became

a tree in the process of

putting out his single leaf

But I know the carnations,

huge flowers from a funerary

display, are themselves dying while

exquisitely perfuming the living

room. Such a consummation,

their coming and going,

such an affirmation.

11. nap (Hungarian)

A szegfűk illata -

akár a szegfűszegé és mégis

valami sokkal édesebb -

szinte gyárilag előállított

esszencia, növényi folyadék.

A szegfűt minden más virágnál

jobban kedvelem, mert

olyan mesterséges a kinézete,

szervetlen, majdnem tökéletes,

minden virágok ideális

absztrakciója, látszólag

olyan hosszú életű, mint

a hírneves jade-levél

attól a kínai képfaragótól,

aki maga is majdnem fává

változott, mire elkészült a mű.

De a szekfűt, e különös virágot,

a temetési szertartásokról is ismerem,

ahol maguk is haldokolnak, mialatt

illatuk élettel telíti meg a termet.

Micsoda beteljesülés,

ahogy járnak, kelnek közöttünk,

micsoda életigenlés!
