Nash, Ogden: A nyelvőr (The Purist in Hungarian)

Portre of Nash, Ogden

The Purist (English)

I give you now Professor Twist,
A conscientious scientist,
Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile."

A nyelvőr (Hungarian)

Twist urat mutatom be most,
a rettenthetetlen tudóst.
„Nem hibáz - mondták - semmiben se!”,
s elküldték távol dzsungelekbe.
Folyóparton ütvén tanyát,
hölgyére egy nap nem talált.
Megtudta később inasától,
hogy felfalta egy alligátor.
Twist úr csak mosolygott szaván -
„Krokodilust gondolt talán!”
