Porter, Peter: A történészek kínt idéznek (The Historians Call Up Pain in Hungarian)

Portre of Porter, Peter

The Historians Call Up Pain (English)

When his father died still apostate,
The new Emperor took his grandfather's name
(The eighth to be so called) and appointed
The most zealous Inquisitor
History has yet recorded. In the subject lands,
The Eastern Pale, the prosperous Low Countries,
And even in his own great hinterland,
Ten thousand heretics were burnt to death
In one year. Men dreamed of Millennium
The more; martyrs died soundlessly at the stake,
Their eyes hotter than the flames. The Emperor
Caused his father's grave to be opened
And sent the Pope his bones packed in the ashes
Of a thousand Adamites. This, of course, was
Six centuries ago: Today this
Is a best bet Honours question
In the History Tripos; it has also provided
Several specious parallels for Marxists
Praising Thomas Muntzer and American Scholars
Screening for chiliasm. Yet if we keep
Our minds on the four last things
And join the historians on their frieze of pain
We may forget our world of milk gone stale,
Cancer touches in the afternoon, girls in Jensens,
Gramophone records scratched and warped,
Managers fattening tumours of ambition.
We cannot know what John of Leyden felt
Under the Bishop's tongs – we can only
Walk in temperate London, our educated city,
Wishing to cry as freely as they did who died
In the Age of Faith. We have our loneliness
And our regret with which to build an eschatology.

A történészek kínt idéznek (Hungarian)

Hogy apja meghalt, hitehagyottként,
Az új uralkodó felvette nagyapja nevét
(S lett mint ilyen a nyolcadik), és kinevezte
A világtörténelem legvakbuzgóbb
Inkvizítorát: A korona országaiban, a Keleti
Szigetrészen, a termékeny Németalföldön,
De saját nagy hátországában is,
Tízezer eretneket égettek meg egyetlen
Évben. Az emberek álma a millenniumról még
Fénylőbben lángolt; némán haltak a mártírok,
Szemük a máglya tüzét túllobogta. Az uralkodó
Felnyittatta apja sírját, és a csontokat
Elküldte a pápának, ezer adamita hamvaiba
Ágyazván őket. Mindez, persze, hat
Évszázada esett: ma ez az üldözés
A legbiztosabb pontszerző tétel
A Történelmi Szupervizsgán; hasonlatanyagul
Jó a marxistáknak is, akik Münzer Tamást
Magasztalják, jó az amerikai tudósoknak,
Kik a millenizmust mérlegelik. Hanem ha
A négy végső dologra gondolunk,
S követjük a kínokat idéző történészeket,
Megfeledkezhetünk világunkról, ahol a tej megint
Összement, rákra gyanakszunk, lányok jensen-ben
Járnak, hanglemezek karcolódnak s vetemednek,
Vezetők hízlalnak ambíció-daganatokat.
Nem tudhatjuk, mit érzett Leydeni János
A püspök tüzes fogói alatt – járkálunk
Csak mérsékelt és művelt Londonunkban,
És szeretnénk oly felszabadultan sírni, mint ők,
Kik meghaltak a Hit Korában. Miénk a magány és
A kései bánat, megalkotni eszkatológiánkat.
